Description

Perkins Center for the Arts is a unique cultural organization dedicated to excellence in the arts and to providing a wide range of creative opportunities for people of all ages and every level of artistic development. Central to our mission is the belief that artists and the language of the arts are ideal for perceiving and interpreting the complex modern world in which we live.

Designated by the NJ State Council on the Arts as a Major Presenting Organization and as a recipient of the Council’s Citation of Excellence, Perkins Center has been recognized for a solid history of artistic excellence, substantial programming and broad public service.

Perkins Center offers arts programs that promote participation, understanding, and communication amongst people. The art programs at Perkins Center provide valuable art skills to youth, helping to develop a talent for personal expression and creative thinking.

Perkins Center is unique in its ability to provide high quality artistic programming in a grassroots community setting. The Center’s programs include: Studio Classes in the visual and performing arts for all ages; a Conservatory with individual and group music lessons; an Exhibition Series which promotes and supports emerging and established artists from the region; an ARTS (Art Reaching The Students) Program which matches professional artists with schools for extended residencies in their respective disciplines; a Community Collaborations Program featuring a summer arts program, an after school & summer arts workshop series, and a mural/community gardens initiative in Camden City; and a Performance Series including the classic Chamber Concerts and the folk/contemporary DeCafe Concerts.

Facility Description

Located on a beautiful 5-acre arboretum in Moorestown, NJ, the striking 1910 Tudor-style manor home that houses Perkins was designed in 1910 by Philadelphia architect, Herbert C. Wise. With an adaptive reuse as a community arts center, Perkins center provides an intimate, comfortable setting for classes, exhibitions and perfomances. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is considered by the New Jersey Historic Trust to be the most widely used historic building in the state.


Instructors Description

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS FACULTY The visual arts faculty at Perkins consists of many artists who are renown in their fields. Many are graduates of major university programs and have spent numerous years teaching their craft at the Center and other venues.

CONSERVATORY FACULTY are graduates of major music conservatories and universities. Many instructors have rigouous training in specialized musical fields and perform professionally.


Accreditations & Affiliations

Perkins Center is a Registered New Jersey Professional Development Provider for State certified teachers. Teachers can earn professional development hours by participating in any course or workshop listed in the course catalog. Perkins Center is included in the provider directory on the Department of Education's website, www.state.nj.us/education/.
