Local Teams Compete in Sally Ride National Toy Challenge

Kathryn Sullivan, the first woman to walk in space, recruited hundreds of 5th through 8th graders with a very clear rallying goal.  To paraphrase her: “I want a second chance in space when I’m 80, just like John Glenn.  The difference is that I want to go to Mars … and I’m counting on YOU to get me there.”  This inspiration, received face to face from a real astronaut, was the real prize for five Delaware Valley teams that competed in the Sally Ride National Toy Challenge in North Carolina.  Each team designed and built a toy of their own invention for the competition. They were judged by scientist members of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society.  No greater reward exists for this parent than one of these kids, on their return from Mars in 2030, remembering one of these pictures as their inspiration to get there.
