Garden State Discovery Museum

Celebrates a Decade of Discoveries

It started just ten years ago with a brainstorm and a simple sketch. Now, highlighting the history of “One of the Country’s Best Children’s Museums” the Garden State Discovery Museum pays tribute to the region with a super birthday treat.

Celebrating “A Decade of Discoveries” the museum shines the spotlight on many artists, special performers, unique entertainers, multicultural community groups and other favorites audiences have welcomed and loved over the past ten years.

“We’re bringing back many of our favorites, as they deserve an encore having contributed to our popularity and success,” explains museum co-director Sarah Orleans. “Almost every weekend in 2004 will feature a special event as part of our cumulative birthday celebration. We’ve put a lot of energy into providing high-quality, age-appropriate programming, and as a result, many of our performers have become main-stage regulars, and many of our events have become annual festivals. We want to share our special birthday with the artists and performers as well as our members and the guests that have given us so much support,” adds Orleans. June is the museum’s actual birthday month, and to celebrate the occasion, admission will be FREE on June 5 as we welcome beloved children’s characters Madeline and Clifford. “Two of a Kind” will take the stage, as well as the African American Stilt Ballet and award-winning sand artist Karl Wirtz will be outside literally “getting his hands on the fun” with life-sized sand sculptures.

In the spirit of celebrating all that’s “great about the Garden State,” summer will highlight the beaches and boardwalks of New Jersey, complete with strolling entertainment and caricature artists. No summer would be complete without paying tribute to the greatest concert in history - kid-style, with the annual KidsRock Woodstock Festival.

“When we look back at the last decade, we realize what a contribution we have made to the community. We provide a 15,000 square-foot wonderland for exploration, entertainment, a wealth of authentic multicultural offerings, a full roster of parent-child classes, educational enrichment programs and the Discovermore Museum Store. We support NJ’s core-curriculum standards and help nurture the lessons learned in the classroom with stimulating activities,” explains Orleans’ partner, museum co-director Roree Iris-Williams.

The Garden State Discovery Museum has a lot to celebrate as it hits double digits - what started as a sketch on the back of a paper placemat has become a regional tourist attraction and a beloved member of the community!
