Mission & Philosophy
The mission of Lansdowne Friends School is to engage children in a challenging educational program guided by Quaker values, especially those of respect for all people and peaceful problem solving.
Respect for all calls us to honor the racial, religious, economic and cultural diversity of our students. We treasure each child and cultivate creative, compassionate, and capable individuals. Peaceful problem solving calls us to work cooperatively and to practice non-violent responses to conflict. We recognize the spirituality of life by encouraging reflection in weekly Meeting for Worship and by offering opportunities that enable students to construct knowledge from direct experience. Our program supports academic growth and responsible stewardship of our earth.
Educational Objectives
To offer a creative inquiry-based hands-on curriculum that encourages academic growth through discovery and fosters development of compassion, inner discipline, sense-of-self and problem solving. Programs include language arts, social studies, mathematics, Spanish, fine arts, shop, music, gym and a newly enriched environmental science program that is being developed with Bryn Mawr College, University of Pennsylvania and Rutgers in partnership.
Learning Environment
Within each classroom we seek to provide an age appropriate setting which fosters the social, emotional, physical, spiritual and intellectual development of each child. A low teacher/child ratio contributes to a safe, supportive, relaxed environment in which each child can be nurtured. As children interact with their peers and explore their environment, they develop decision-making skills, increasing independence and self-confidence, and an awareness and better understanding of self.
Development of each child as individual and as a member of a group is encouraged through: stories, drama, music, art, cooking, use of manipulative materials, trips and thematic studies. Each child's creativity and self-expression are encouraged. As children progress from Pre-Primary classes through 6th grade, new challenges build on previous experiences, to further their skill development.
