St. Luke’s Goes Digital

The future has come to women all three of St. Luke’s Hospitals (Quakertown, Allentown, and North) in the form of the GE Senographe® DS full-field digital mammography system. Digital mammography use X-rays to produce an image of the breast just like the traditional film version, but with digital the radiologist can enhance, manipulate and improve the image to provide more information. The best part is digital mammography increases early detection rates in both pre-menopausal and young women. “This all-digital system is revolutionizing breast care,” says Joseph Russo, MD, director of Women’s Imaging, St. Luke’s Hospital & Health Network. “The technology provides outstanding quality and clear, highly-detailed images. The digital images allow for better visibility of the breast, particularly near the skin line, the chest wall and in women with dense breast tissue. In turn, physicians are better equipped to detect and diagnose breast cancer in patients with an extra measure of confidence.” The system has patient-centric design and intuitive controls that allow the technologists who perform the exams to focus on the patient, making the mammography exam an easier and more comfortable experience. For the physician, the technology provides greater flexibility in viewing the exam and performing biopsies.
