The Spring has sprung so it’s time to leave those winter blues behind and get up and go—out of the house and to great events throughout the area. We picked out some of the many events going on throughout the region that we’d thought you’d enjoy with the kids, and there’s many more in our calendar.

Central Jersey

Learn about four centuries of New Jersey’s history in an exciting way at Washington Crossing, which gives visitors a unique glance at history through live reenactment demonstrations, military encampments, canal boat rides on the Delaware and Raritan Canal, music,  historic games and crafts, vintage baseball, and “The Market Place.” This annual event is FREE and FUN for the whole family, so come out and experience New Jersey’s rich history.

The 22nd Annual Red Bank Jazz & Blues Festival is swinging into town. Come enjoy hundreds of the best jazz and blues artists around, excellent food, and crafts for the kids. A couple hundred thousand people are expected to attend one of the largest and best FREE jazz fests in the Northeast. There is also fine dining and great shopping found all around the festival. Get ready to jazz up your summer

Fly high at the United States Air Force 2008 McGuire Air Expo hosted by the 305th Air Mobility Wing. The main headliners will be the U.S. Air Force’s Thunderbirds as they fly into their 55th year of existence, but the KC-10 Extender, the C-17 Globemaster III, and the KC-135 Stratotanker won’t be left in the Thunderbirds trails. This event concludes Air Force Week in the Philadelphia area and is appropriately themed “Above all… Be inspired.” Over 300,000 people are expected to attend this two day FREE expo. Come celebrate the honorable accomplishments of the U.S. Air Force.

Sesame Place kicks off the 2008 season on its Opening Day on May 3. Ride the brand new Sunny Day Carousel along with the other favorites in Elmo’s World. Of course, all the Sesame Street characters will be on hand including Elmo, Abby Cadabby, and Big Bird. Enjoy water rides, musical guests and activities, character lunches, the daily Rockin’ Round the Clock parade, and fantastic fireworks displays. There’s no place like Sesame Place, so come join us in the most fun-filled neighborhood around!

The 35th Annual Mercer Museum Folk Fest boasts more than 80 crafters and artisans that take you back in time as they display skills and trades of early America. The entire family will enjoy all day long live entertainment including costumed craft demonstrations and militia encampment. The Children’s Stage features puppetry, storytelling, and music. The Main Stage offers jugglers and blue grass music. Children will make crafts at the Children’s Craft Tent, ride a horse-drawn wagon, and take a horse-powered carousel ride.

Allentown’s Mayfair Festival of the Arts is back and better than ever! Come experience this exciting five day event starting on Thursday, May 22 and running everyday until Monday, May 26. There is so much to see and do, five days may not be enough! Cedar Beach Park will be alive with renaissance style tents, Berman Sculptures, wandering minstrels, dancers, storytellers, art exhibits, local and national musical acts, hands-on crafts demonstrations, and culinary delights. Kidspace and Kidstage will offer children tons of cool attractions including the Hobbit House, Lehigh Valley Zoo, Baum School Art Works, and the WFMZ Weather Center.

Bethlehem’s historic Main Street hosts over 80 artists and crafters from around the country who will display their talents for a two day sidewalk art show. Good food and fun things to do for the whole family make this event a hit for everyone. Kids can enter contests to show off their own artistic abilities at stencil art, pointillism, stained glass pictures, still life drawings, self portraits, and collages. Winners will receive gift certificates. There will be tons of fun activities, games, sights, and sounds so come see what the fascinating world of art has to offer.

South Jersey

The Backyardigans Live: Tale of the Mighty Knights

Get your tickets now for The Backyardigans Live: Tale of the Mighty Knights being performed at the Susquehanna Bank Center (formerly the Tweeter Center) in Camden, NJ. There will be six shows: three on May 3 and three on May 4. Tickets range from $20-$42.50. In this tale, based on a prime time special on Nickelodeon, the knights take their courage on a quest against a dragon to protect a magical egg. Characters include Uniqua and Tyrone as the knights. Embark on this journey with The Backyardigans Live, and help save the mysterious egg!

Tens of thousands of people are expected to come out and see the more than 100 artists and crafters display their marvelous works. Children will have a world of fun in the “Kidzone” with activities like pony rides, carnivals, amusement rides. Featured will be the Children’s Discovery Museum. There will be live blues, rock, and folk music for everyone, a classic car show, and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle display. Delicious food vendors will be aplenty.

 

9th Annual Block Party 2008 May 16

Come down to a Block Party on Main Street in Salem, N.J.  Amusements, children’s games, moon bounces, delicious food, live music, and much more make this block party in Salem a must. This annual event is Salem’s largest and most exciting family event. Kids will go bonkers on a bungee pull, rock wall, giant slide, and pedal carts. This FREE party will be hosted by the Salem County Historical Society.

Car enthusiasts can check out all the gorgeous classis cars. The festival-like atmosphere has something for the whole family. There will be live music, great food, and activities galore. Special events include Bob Van Sciver and his Jet Car and Benny the Bomb. This special night will conclude with an awesome fireworks display!
