PPA ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 2004 EDITORIAL
AND DESIGN AWARDS FOR LEADING PARENTING PUBLICATIONS
LOS ANGELES (Feb. 26, 2005)—Parenting Publications of America (PPA)
gave out 331 Editorial and Design Competition awards
to parenting newspapers and magazines at an awards
banquet on Feb. 26, 2005, the climax of the
three-day PPA Annual Convention in St. Petersburg,
FL.
PPA’s
Editorial and Design Awards Competition recognizes
excellence in journalism, photography and design
achieved by publishers, editors, writers and
designers at member publications. Prof. Daryl Moen
of the University of Missouri School of Journalism
coordinated the annual contest. A panel of 33 judges
poured over 979 entries this year (up from 774 last
year) to choose the winners in each category. All
judges have had significant professional experience.
The number of entries jumped dramatically. Over all,
they were up 26%. Editorial, the largest category,
was up 22%, and Design was up 28%. General
Excellence, the smallest category, was up 63% (from
49-80). Entries
came from 66 companies representing 91 publications.
“The
purpose of the PPA awards competition is to
encourage a high level of journalistic performance
and service to communities by recognizing editorial
excellence and outstanding visual presentation in
parenting publications,” said PPA Executive Director
James Dowden.
Open to
all member publications, the competition was broken
into circulation divisions: 30,000 or fewer, 30,001
to 54,999, and 55,000 or more. Members competed for
gold, silver and bronze in 22 editorial categories,
19 design categories, four General Excellence
categories (Most Improved, Rookie of the Year,
Ancillary Publication and General Excellence),
reflecting editorial and design.
Because more people entered, the competition was
stiffer. That was particularly evident in
Publisher’s/Editor’s Commentary, Family Fun Column,
Personal Essay and Overall Design. Each of those
categories increased by at least 52%. The quality of
the competition improved noticeably
While the number of entries in the General
Excellence GE3 category did not increase
dramatically, the judge was struck by how much
better the publications were than last year when she
judged the category. “It was amazing,” she said.
“Especially in the small and medium circulation
categories, the publications have improved a lot.
Last year, the competition was stiffest in the large
circulation category, but this year, it was
competitive across the board.”
Established in 1988, PPA is a national trade
association of regional parenting publications that
reaches from Seattle to Boston and from Minneapolis
to Miami, and to Canada and Australia. Some of the
publications are tabloid newspapers; others are
magazines, with 4-color, glossy covers.
Headquartered in Los Angeles, PPA is a nonprofit
national organization representing more than 110
parenting magazines and newspapers in the United
States, Canada and Australia
